The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is a very cute (though a bit strange) book that requires a complete suspension of disbelief. Despereaux is a mouse who falls in love with the Princess Pea. Miggery Sow is a girl who wants to be a princess. Roscuro is a conniving rat with a plan. Soup is important, too. The book is split into parts telling the stories of these human and rodent characters until they converge at a single point into a single story. The chapters are very short. The Tale of Despereaux is great for a bedtime read-aloud to be enjoyed by parents and children alike.
